Sony is facing a threat of a $7.9 billion class-action lawsuit over pricing in the PlayStation Store
According to information from Reuters, Sony might face a collective lawsuit amounting to $7.9 billion. The company is accused of abusing its dominant position, leading to unfair pricing policies for consumers.
In 2022, consumer rights expert Alex Neil filed a lawsuit against Sony Interactive Entertainment on behalf of 9 million gamers in the UK. She alleges that the company abused its dominant position by insisting that games be sold exclusively through the PlayStation Store, which charges a 30% commission to developers and publishers. This resulted in gamers being forced to purchase content at inflated prices.
Sony's representatives insist that the accusations are unfounded and are calling for the case to be closed. However, the UK Competition Appeals Tribunal has decided to consider the case. Additionally, individuals who made purchases on the PlayStation Store after the lawsuit was filed have been excluded from the list of plaintiffs.
