Enter Azeroth Like Never Before: World of Warcraft Now Playable in Virtual Reality with Free WoVR Mod!
A talented group of modders, known as Flatscreen 2 VR, has successfully transformed World of Warcraft into a virtual reality experience with their latest creation, WoVR. This mod, which is available for free download, enables players to immerse themselves in the World of Warcraft environment like never before.
World of Warcraft: Classic Now in VR
The WoVR mod specifically adapts version 3.3.5a of World of Warcraft, originally released in June 2010. This version encompasses the first two expansions of the game, The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King, offering a nostalgic yet innovative VR experience. Unlike typical VR adaptations, WoVR includes full 6DOF (six degrees of freedom) tracking support, enhancing the realism by allowing precise tracking of both the player's head position and orientation in three-dimensional space.
As of its release on April 12, WoVR requires the use of VR controllers and does not support traditional mouse and keyboard inputs, though the team at Flatscreen 2 VR has hinted at the possibility of adding such features if the mod gains sufficient popularity.
A Long Journey to Reality
The development of WoVR has been a labor of love and persistence. Originally conceived in 2013 for the Oculus Rift DK1, the project underwent sporadic development, including a four-year break, before the team resumed work in January 2024. The completed 1.0 version supports both first- and third-person perspectives and features a sophisticated UI that can dynamically hide elements behind objects within the game world, enhancing the immersion.
This is not Flatscreen 2 VR's first foray into converting MMORPGs into VR. They previously released a VR mod for Final Fantasy 14 in late 2022. Those interested in WoVR, as well as other mods from Flatscreen 2 VR, can find download and installation instructions on the group's Discord server.
