Today, Darkest Dungeon 2, reaching version 1.0, is releasing on Steam
Today marks a significant milestone for Darkest Dungeon 2, the follow-up to Red Hook Games' haunting and stylish roguelike game, renowned for its unforgiving level of difficulty. Following two years of early access development, the game has finally reached version 1.0. What's more, it coincides with the official release of the game on Steam, following its early access period that was exclusively on the Epic Store.
"We're thrilled to be back on Steam and eagerly anticipate your feedback," Red Hook's development team stated in a recent Steam post. "For those of you who accompanied us on Darkest Dungeons I's journey, you know we always read the forums and appreciate your opinions."
This message describes the expected features of version 1.0 of the game, including 12 playable characters and a fully completed story consisting of five acts. Some of these features will be available in the v1.0 release, specifically the last two acts and the twelfth character - the Flagellant. As the name suggests, the Flagellant draws strength from his suffering, is able to accept negative status effects from other party members, and receives bonuses when he is close to death.
In addition, Red Hook has taken into account feedback received after the release of the demo version on Steam in February, focusing on the recently introduced 3D sections of the game. They have made a number of improvements to the control system, the Darkest Dungeon itself, and the user experience, as well as added a huge amount of new content and features.
One feature that won't be available in the 1.0 release is mod support. The developers stated that they are "very passionate" about modding and have "a lot of great ideas" about how to implement mods, but it's something they will "devote time" to after the 1.0 launch. You can see the game in action in the trailer above.
